Recently my friends have been telling me that there's an Online Adaptor released for the N64...and it's maybe true...maybe not? They tell me that it attatched into the back of an N64 and had a dial-up modem built inside of the adaptor. They also told me that Nintendo didn't make very many of them...and the ones that they did make never really went "public" so to speak. I've been scouring the web for info on this....but no dice. Did they really make an online adaptor for it? Because I don't know of any other accessories that plugged into the back of the N64 bay.

One of you Nintendo wizards (Red...master duelist...etc.) probably know about this...right?

They made the 64DD (Nintendo 64 Disk Drive) that was release in limited quantities in Japan but I never heard of a modem adapter for the Nintendo 64. Check out http://www.64dd.net for more details.

Sega Saturn had a modem called NetLink that plugged into the cartridge slot but Nintendo 64 never had a modem adapter to my knowledge.

EDIT: If you look at www.64dd.net you will see there was a modem adapter for the Nintendo 64 that looks like it worked with the 64DD. I didn't know that but now I do. It looks like there was also a keyboard and mouse released. Interesting...

If I recall correctly the keyboard and mouse were for the 64DD edition of Mario Paint, one of only a handful of games ever released for it. Doshin The Giant looked to be the only one really worth owning. I believe a GC version was in development at some point, or maybe it was released in Japan.

I'd say it's a bogus report. There is no way, at least that I'm aware of , to link N64 games. They were never designed with LAN settings in mind so even if there was some adapter out there for it, I would wonder what purpose it might serve!?

The network would allow gamers to hook up and read/write e-mail, read a special RandnetDD Nintendo newsletter, and chat. A 64DD keyboard released by Randnet in partnership with Nintendo was developed to ease the pain of writing e-mails and chatting with the RandnetDD software. Anyway, the main purpose of the network was to connect and play games on the net.

True, true, and true.

By the way...would anybody here actually want to collect one of these rare thingymabobs at all? Yeah...sure N64 online gaming would be cool (wonder if the DD is still operational?) and of course I've been looking on the site and seeing people shelling out over $150 for a copy of F-Zero that's online compatible! I don't know about you guys here...but if it'd cost me that much then I don't think that I would get a DD even if I found one. It'd run me up a little too much. But still...this is cool...glad thing my friend told me about it.

It would be an interesting read at any rate. I'd sure like to know more about this...and I had no idea you could do the chat thing with the DD. Too bad that idea never caught on here sad.gif

Erm... Where did we establish that this is for real?

To me it sounds bogus, because Nintendo had a lot of trouble with 3rd party support in the N64/PS1 age... There'd be no point in making an adaptor for people to browse the net on their 64 or anything like that when people could just use their computers... Plus with this whole anti-multi-media attitude Nintendo has, I find this very unlikely...

Also, since the DD flopped, would it make a whole lot of sense to spend more money to build something that most likely won't sell?
