C.O.P. The Recruit Review

Finally, a game like GTA is released for the Nintendo DS in 3D. These were my initial thoughts when I first saw this game. Then I noticed that the box mentioned multiple E3 awards that this game had received. This made me really excited about C.O.P. The Recruit. Just imagine, a perfect GTA clone for the DS, and then you wake up to a harsh reality of a poorly controlled, and under done game. C.O.P has potential but there are many problems that just hold it back from being a true 3D GTA clone.

C.O.P. The Recruit

First of all, your character controls about as good as a lawnmower, and I don’t mean a riding lawnmower, I mean a push lawnmower that needs to be tilted to make a turn. Whenever you need to turn a corner you need to stop and press Y to turn you facing left and A to turn you facing right which is really a pain when you have to go somewhere quickly and you have to stop and turn your body. Also, the interface is actually pretty confusing. Instead of simply giving you a waypoint for your mission you need to search for the correct location via an endless loop of annoying menus that really disorient you. The menu system is probably the worst part of the game, and having to change waypoints instead of simply clicking on the objective you want to complete is really annoying and can be fairly time consuming.

C.O.P. The Recruit

The gunplay is one of the better areas of C.O.P. The Recruit, and allows you to rambo your way through most missions leaving a wake of vanishing bodies behind you. Probably one of the more unfortunate features missing in this game is the ability to make choices. Yes, you can choose which mission to do in the game, but you do not have an option to be a corrupt cop and shoot civilians and create all kinds of havoc. When you shoot a bystander they simply scurry away like ants, and the one you shot point blank in the face acts like the bullet pinged off of their pixelated head as they scurry away with all the other bystanders.

C.O.P. The Recruit

Another huge disappointment is that there is no voice work, and little to no sound work done for this game. Just about the only sounds in the game are city sounds, car sounds, and gun sounds. So basically, if you need to play this game with the sound off you really aren’t missing anything. The graphics aren’t that great but for having to render everything in 3D on a DS they are about what was expected. There is really nothing else to do in this game once you beat it once, so there is a very low replay value.

Final Verdict

Overall, C.O.P. The Recruit feels like it was released mid production. I think if this game was thoroughly tested and reworked it could have been an amazing title, unfortunately it flops pretty hard. Purchase at your own risk.
