The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy Review

The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy is a game where you can play as any of the characters from the cartoon show. After you select your character it becomes an all out brawl to be the last one standing. Should you stand up and get yourself a copy of this game?

The simple answer is “no”. There is a lot that they could have accomplished in this game but they failed in almost every aspect. The game play is similar to Super Smash Bros. but it lacks the finesse and fun. There are only 2 main attacks and a use/pickup button. Each character can also run around collecting these energy bits to power up a super attack which seems to be the key to winning each time. The levels are boring and tend to add little fun to the already boring game play. The only relief from the boring levels was they changed as the battle continued. For example: In the first level of the “story mode” you start in a graveyard. After awhile fighting in the graveyard a gate opens… if someone walks through it all are forced into the next part of the level which somehow becomes a street with some creature chasing you as you fight. As the battle continues you eventually fight on the top of a skyscraper, where if one of you gets knocked off you just walk out of the elevator and back on the roof.

You start the game and from the very beginning there isn’t a whole lot to do. The “story” mode has no story at all; instead it contains a certain order of enemies you fight in different settings for no apparent reason. It took me a few tries to beat the first stage but after awhile I realized that if I just run around avoiding the enemy and collecting the energy from barrels and containers on the map I can use my special over and over again until I win. It ended up making the rest of the game super easy to beat once I started using that strategy. They definitely made super powers way too strong. It is possible to take one of the enemy’s lives per super power and if enough energy is on the screen you can use it to collect another and kill the enemy again with it.

After you beat the game and unlock all the modes and characters there really is no reason to play the game again. Because of this the replay value is pretty much abysmal. The graphics were tolerable and understandable to maintain the cartoon style of the show it was based on. However, it wouldn’t have hurt to make the backgrounds look nice and add a little shine to the player models.

Final Verdict

Overall The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy is fairly boring and will only have its select following. For most people I suggest waiting for Super Smash Brothers Brawl to be released.
