GEEKEND 2009, An Interactive Conference, Announced by Savannah, Georgia

For three days this November a proud tribe of self-professed “Geeks” from all walks of life will descend upon the Creative Coast of Georgia to “get their geek on” at the first annual GEEKEND 2009. GEEKEND 2009 conference is being held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in historic downtown Savannah, Georgia, November 6-8, 2009.

The unique, three-day interactive conference is the first of its kind for Savannah. Organizers view GEEKEND 2009 as a fun, interactive networking style meet-up that embraces all things “Geek.” GEEKEND will bring together geeks of all ages, whether they are iPhone obsessed, Facebook savvy students or experienced Blackberry wielding IT pros, to collectively “unleash the geek.”

With three days of expert panels, presentations and a slate of nationally recognized keynote speakers, GEEKEND is poised to become one of the “must attend” interactive conferences in the United States. Organizers view GEEKEND 2009 as a way to collectively celebrate all that is cool about being a “Geek” in today’s exciting new technological and creative environment.

“We want to flip the idea of somebody hanging a badge around their neck over a corporate T-shirt,” said Jake Hodesh of New Moon of Savannah, one of Geekend’s organizers. “We want cool, crazy people walking around downtown [Savannah]. They’ll still have badges around their necks, but they will have energy — creative energy.”

Savannah is uniquely positioned to host an event like GEEKEND 2009. The city proudly preserves its rich and historic past, though with GEEKEND 2009 it is boldly carving a dynamic path into the 21st century. As the home to the largest art and design school in the United States (Savannah College of Art and Design), a rapidly expanding “creative class,” and with start-up companies continuing to set up shop under its lush canopy of Spanish moss, Savannah is a magnet that attracts innovative “Geeks” from all walks of life.

Kicking GEEKEND 2009 into high gear with a keynote presentation is world-renowned graphic design guru David Carson. As a surfing obsessed graphic design innovator, Carson changed the way we look at magazines when he turned the old ideas of design upside down with his rule bending art direction at the legendary Ray Gun Magazine. In today’s world, where a good idea in a dorm room can become tomorrow’s powerhouse start-up, Carson truly gets what it takes to push the barriers and stand out in a crowded field.

Day two sees Major Nelson (Larry Hyrb) of Xbox LIVE take the stage. As the public face of Xbox LIVE, Major Nelson seamlessly interweaves his deep understanding of social media (he has 55,000+ Twitter fans) with his love of interactive gaming. Major Nelson is in high demand at conferences worldwide as his distinctive spin on both topics has made him a fan favorite.

Joining David Carson and Major Nelson at GEEKEND 2009 is an impressive roster of panelists and speakers from Disney, Behance, Sudjam, Rails Machine, Brandeis University, Savannah College of Art and Design, Music Intelligence Solutions and a wide variety of interactive and creative movers and shakers.

The first annual GEEKEND is proudly presented in tandem by New Moon of Savannah, The Creative Coast Alliance, BFG Communications, Music Intelligence Solutions, Creative Seed Initiative and Refresh Savannah.
