King of Clubs is supposed to be a wacky and more mature mini golf game with lots of laughs. So, when I initially got King of Clubs in for review I was excited to see a game that looked like it may take a note from one of my favorite golf games, Outlaw Golf, and I asked my fiancé to join me for some great times. We loaded the game up and watched the well made CGI opening and were excited to laugh and have a great time.
The game starts up and we decided to play a game together and maybe add a few computer players in for a challenge. Unfortunately, we came to find out there is no AI in multiplayer making us have to play VS each other. It wasn’t a huge deal but when we get competitive VS each other things can turn bad. So, the game starts and immediately I am disappointed. The character models are rendered very well but the course and everything else looks like it was drawn by a 4 year old. I shrugged it off and moved on because I believe games can be ugly and still amazing. So I am up first and the controls become the next problem. They are really hard to get used to because they are nothing like most sports games I have played on the Wii. First you have to press and release A then you pull back to the power you want. Then you press and hold A and then finally you swing the remote forward and release A, just as your club contacts the ball. This can become very unnerving since if you don’t release at the right time or if you keep the button held you need to start the sequence over.
Finally I get my swing down and I realize the path the ball will take is drawn with a line on the screen making it easy to at least aim. So I take my second shot and to no avail my ball doesn’t really seem to follow the path that was drawn. I am assuming this is because I didn’t use full power. When I got the hang of it, sinking the shots became easy, that is when I could actually finish the sequence to swing the club. To say the least my fiancé quit after the first hole from pure frustration of not being able to hit the ball. I trucked on alone to see what else I could find about the game. All I found though was horrid graphics, bad controls, and absolutely no interaction or wackiness from my character. In a game about silly characters in a golf game you would expect them to interact… the characters are boring and have no emotions and no reactions to anything. The best aspect of Outlaw Golf was the interactions with your character and the crazy things they would do after a good or bad shot.
Sound in the game was nothing special, and really didn’t do anything for the game. You can purchase items before you start your courses which range from new balls, to ball colors, to new clubs, and background music. Additionally, you can buy special one use balls that add a little bit of an interesting twist to the game. But, unfortunately if you don’t do it right the first time it becomes a real waste of money. You can also buy mulligans to use when you mess up.
Final Verdict
King of Clubs is an ugly, boring, hard to control mess. If you are looking for a mini-golf game similar to Outlaw Golf… this isn’t it, keep waiting. With a little bit of silliness from your characters this would have been a much better game than it is.
