MX vs. ATV Untamed Review

For many years now, the fellows at Rainbow Studios have been blowing the doors off the competition with their adrenaline filled vehicle racing games. Next in line is MX vs. ATV Untamed, the first for the next-gen and HD revolution. Can it hold up to the new competitors in the arena such as Motostorm?

Graphically, MX vs. ATV Untamed is a real mixed bag… For everything they did right, there seems to be some details that were forgotten, leaving a good looking game, with some very dated looking elements. Some of the outdoor environments are sketchy at best and can’t even compare to the new extreme race games on the market. With that being said, the graphical lapses aren’t going to detract from the enjoyment of game play. Sound quality is what is expected from a motor sport game with plenty of engine revving fun for everyone.

MX vs. ATV Untamed shines in one arena in particular… options. There are so many ways to play this game, it’s incredible. So, you mastered X-Cross? Then try the Endurocross feature. If you see yourself getting bored or frustrated with a game mode, it seems like there are endless others to choose from. But, the problem is, some modes will make you bored or frustrated or both. One of the particular selling features of the game is to pull off wicked tricks. That part is pretty cool, until you try to land them. Landing tricks and jumps in this game is infuriating. You think you have your ride all lined up for a perfect landing, and you end up kissing the ground. In the X-Cross feature, if you do this, forget about finishing in a decent position, so one of the highlights became a lowlight for me. Then in other modes in MX vs. ATV Untamed, you can cruise around for what seems for hours and not feel like you are accomplishing anything. One other thing I found kind of wonky were the semi-ultra realistic physics that just don’t seem right. As soon as I thought I had them figured out, I ended up sliding across the dirt in a smoldering heap.

A strong point of MX vs. ATV Untamed is the variety of vehicles you have to choose from, with all types of bikes and quads. Each of them has their own quirks that need to be mastered if you want to roll with them successfully. This should be expected in a game of this nature, and MX vs. ATV Untamed did not fail to deliver. Also the multiplayer/online is pretty well done. You can do split screen racing in a LAN setup, or go online for a few different options. These options include straight racing, to an online game of tag.

Final Verdict

Overall, MX vs. ATV Untamed is a solid game, but nothing to wait in line to play. With other games in the market with similar themes, MX vs. ATV Untamed delivers a solid, but forgettable play experience. The graphics are above average and the game play is serviceable. MX vs. ATV Untamed does shine with its varied options, and online play.
